Let's have Dinner and Discuss the Future of Cascade Heights!

Over the past two weeks, several of my neighbors and I have invited a couple of the candidates who want to represent us for the next four years at City Hall and Atlanta Public Schools, to dinner! We invited Brionte’ McCorkle a candidate for district 11 Atlanta City Council seat, presently held by K. Bottoms who is running for mayor. Eshe’ Collins is the Atlanta Public Schools representative for Dist. 6 (Southwest Atl.) and the incumbent. 

Our first dinner party, was held at the home of the Riley's of Beecher Hills and our guest for the evening was Brionte’ McCorkle, whom answered all questions with honesty and refreshing intelligence. Ms. McCorkle’s experience and background with the Sierra Club as assistant director of transportation and communications makes her a very attractive candidate and someone the residents of Southwest Atlanta should get to know!

Dinner and Discussions...

Our second dinner party, was held at my neighbors the Martin's of Adams Park, since 1971 and was equally interesting, our guest was Eshe’ Collins. Ms. Collins has been on the front line in helping to turn our schools around for the past four years, her first term. Let’s be clear she and the superintendent came in after the people, who were in charge were indicted on racketeering charges. That is what politicians and mobsters go to jail for. So they had a tough road ahead of them. Four years have come and gone and Eshe’, the super and other APS reps still have a long way to go. I have found Eshe’ to be honest, objective and fair.  As a former educator for APS, she knows first hand it's challenges.  Eshe’ was informative and brought stats from Therrell, Mays and Cascade schools, which are all performing very well. Eshe’ stated that we (residents) should visit, participate and know what goes on in our schools before we so quickly agree with naysayers that our schools are all bad.

These Dinner Parties, have been informative, interesting and will make you want to get involved in your community and the elections of duties and I hope you will! 

This is how it Works...Twelve dinner guests, who can each take these messages, ideas, plans and thoughts back to 12 neighbors and plan a dinner party for 12 more neighbors. The Goal is to put the candidates in front of us in small groups, before November's election. It will be interesting to see who accepts and what their interests are!!!

Residents of Southwest Atlanta are you ready to help put the best person for the position in office to represent us for the next four years?

Adams Park...soon to undergo some major renovations!

Some great things are taking place in Adams Park!

The Master Grill Area, Amphitheater or Canyon as some call it. will have erosion remediation work completed in this area and those horrendous green picnic tables...bye bye, along with a couple big trees. I expect the ground will look a lot different and the way the water flowed into this area will be corrected.

How about a Boardwalk all of the way around the lake...Shut the front to door, AP! With a new pump house with a porch to fish from. The work should be beginning soon and completed by Spring 2016.

My neighbors house was finally torn down today.....

Hello Neighbors,

This was 2014 Venetian Dr. last year and today, it was finally torn down after being vacant for 11 years. As some of you may know it is hard living next to a vacant property. My neighbor Mr. Varner went into a retirement home in 2003 and left the home to his grandson, whom never took possession of the property and allowed it to go into disrepair. We have many homes and situations like this in Adams Park and all over the city. These properties test us as neighbors in so many ways, squatters,crime, drug use havens, dangerous and just all around bad on the eyes and lowers property values. 

As neighbors, lets consider coming up with ways to contact owners of vacant homes and see how we can keep these properties thriving and filled with tenants and even better homeowners. This sounds like a tall task but I believe with a good plan we can reduce this problem throughout Adams Park and quite possibly SW Atlanta. Please send me your thoughts ideas and any suggestions and I promise we can make this happen. Help me with the Baby Steps.​ I look forward to hearing from you.

Greetings Neighbors and Friends of Neighborhood Planning Unit -R,

NPU-R will host a Holiday Party for our members, on December 3rd at 6:00 pm till 8pm at the Young Family YMCA 2220 Campbellton Rd. 30311, in the Lee Conference Room.
NPU-R has made great strides over the past 2 years and now it is time to celebrate our victories and plan for 2015. We will have an opportunity to socialize informally and fellowship with our friends, neighbors and representatives from city services. Please feel free to bring a dish, dessert or beverage.
