Meet Atlanta's New Chief of Police...

Important community meetings taking place in our neighborhoods this week.

 And......

Attending these meetings stating our concerns, demanding responses, inclusive follow-up and resolution is how we become the change we want to see. Remember the mayor, city council members, police chief and anybody else that we elect to run the city for us are our employees and these meetings are designed as a check in for general consensus. This is where we check in on our employees and tell them what we want as their Boss... Not attending could mean that they do as they choose... and what employer would allow that???
I hope to see you there!

Atlanta City Studio is coming to Cascade Heights!

Leslie Canaan, of the Atlanta City Studio joined us for dinner and discussed the future of our business corridor and community. The Atlanta City Studio was created by the Department of Planning and Community Development as a pop-up office that is both a work and public space where neighbors can get involved in the preservation and sustainability of our beautiful neighborhoods and green spaces.

Most Metropolitan Atlanta neighborhoods do not have these types of vistas and green spaces due to over development. As residents we will need to work together to make sure that Southwest Atlanta stays beautiful, green and lush and does not become over developed. I always say when African Americans moved to Southwest Atlanta the city, state and government put us on an economic development diet.... and thank goodness! Buckhead, is a concrete jungle and they are trying to create a green space over 400, as I type! Let's work to restore the commercial properties we have already and keep our lovely green spaces intact and maintained so that we can play in our parks, gaze at our vistas, hike in our preserves and most of all spend our money in our community!

FYI....Adams Park has a creek, a lake with fountain with boardwalk, a swimming pool with splash pad, 4 tennis courts (4th highest used in the city) 3 baseball fields, a recreation center with conference rooms and full kitchen, an 18 hole golf course, Tup Holmes with Clubhouse, 3 pavilions with stone grills and an amphitheater with stage (Adams Park and Chastain are sister parks designed by landscape architect William Monroe through the WPA program of the 1940's).

We Live in a Country Club Community.... Residents and neighbors, Please Love, Participate and Preserve our Community because if we do not, someone else will.

This is what Adams Park looks like in the fall, Enjoy!!!

Let's have Dinner and Discuss the Future of Cascade Heights!

Over the past two weeks, several of my neighbors and I have invited a couple of the candidates who want to represent us for the next four years at City Hall and Atlanta Public Schools, to dinner! We invited Brionte’ McCorkle a candidate for district 11 Atlanta City Council seat, presently held by K. Bottoms who is running for mayor. Eshe’ Collins is the Atlanta Public Schools representative for Dist. 6 (Southwest Atl.) and the incumbent.

Our first dinner party, was held at the home of the Riley's of Beecher Hills and our guest for the evening was Brionte’ McCorkle, whom answered all questions with honesty and refreshing intelligence. Ms. McCorkle’s experience and background with the Sierra Club as assistant director of transportation and communications makes her a very attractive candidate and someone the residents of Southwest Atlanta should get to know!

Dinner and Discussions...

Our second dinner party, was held at my neighbors the Martin's of Adams Park, since 1971 and was equally interesting, our guest was Eshe’ Collins. Ms. Collins has been on the front line in helping to turn our schools around for the past four years, her first term. Let’s be clear she and the superintendent came in after the people, who were in charge were indicted on racketeering charges. That is what politicians and mobsters go to jail for. So they had a tough road ahead of them. Four years have come and gone and Eshe’, the super and other APS reps still have a long way to go. I have found Eshe’ to be honest, objective and fair.  As a former educator for APS, she knows first hand it's challenges.  Eshe’ was informative and brought stats from Therrell, Mays and Cascade schools, which are all performing very well. Eshe’ stated that we (residents) should visit, participate and know what goes on in our schools before we so quickly agree with naysayers that our schools are all bad.

These Dinner Parties, have been informative, interesting and will make you want to get involved in your community and the elections of duties and I hope you will!

This is how it Works...Twelve dinner guests, who can each take these messages, ideas, plans and thoughts back to 12 neighbors and plan a dinner party for 12 more neighbors. The Goal is to put the candidates in front of us in small groups, before November's election. It will be interesting to see who accepts and what their interests are!!!

Residents of Southwest Atlanta are you ready to help put the best person for the position in office to represent us for the next four years?

Then join us and share information, spend sometime with your neighbors and become,
The Change, You Want To See!!!

A Special Thank You to the Riley's and the Martin's for welcoming us into your beautiful homes and hosting us and for loving Cascade Heights and Southwest Atlanta!

Sheryl Brown, Adams Park since 2003.
